Do People Really Get Hired By Attending This Job Fair?

Each year, candidates question whether anyone ever gets hired by attending a job fair. We wish to set the record straight: jobs are available through the Michigan job fairs! Candidates need to understand the job fair process, how it works and the follow-up procedures. The first step is to attend the fair and meet the employers. Without this, you eliminate the possibility of receiving a job offer.

Consider this: You decide to deliver your résumé to 20 school districts. You would like to meet with each personnel director to share your teaching experience and commitment to education.
Accomplishing this on your own could take several hours of calls and follow-ups, not to mention the days-off needed to visit each district.

Now, consider the job fair: You will have the opportunity to talk with more than 100 representatives in one day. Although it is not a complete interview, it does move you one step closer to getting a job.

RECOMMENDATIONS: View two short videos "Career Fair Success" AND "The Elevator Pitch" located at: career.emich.edu (Select the Careerspots icon)

"I wanted to thank you very much for all of your assistance in our school district's search for quality teachers. By hiring the best, I can usually forget the rest!!! The teachers that we hired during the past several years from EMU are absolute aces. The education preparation is second to none. Over the years, I have recruited at just about every University in the country. The organization, professionalism, and courtesy exhibited by you and your staff is what separates EMU from the rest."

Steve Zimmerman, Superintendent, Coolidge, Arizona

"Candidates were well prepared with resume information and also interviewed with poise"

James Shaw, Dean of Students, Taylor MI

"Livonia Public Schools counts on special education graduates from Eastern to fill openings each year. We are consistently pleased with the quality teacher candidates we meet each year."

Jack Bauman, Director of Personnel, Livonia MI

"We find the fair to be well organized and the
students well prepared.”

Robert G. Schram, Executive Director of Personnel,
Novi Community Schools, MI

"I just wanted to tell you what a great job you did organizing the event. We spoke with a lot of excellent teacher candidates. The fair was well organized and lunch was delicious. Thanks! Looking forward to next year's fair."

- Jeannie Curtis, Hamilton Schools, Chattanooga TN

"Our district looks forward to the EMU Teacher Career Fair every year. We have always meet excellent candidates who were well-prepared to teach in diverse classrooms and to meet the varied needs of individual students. We have hired many new teachers from Michigan over the past 8-10 years, and we have been very pleased with their performance. We have been especially pleased to find excellent teachers for some of our high needs areas including exceptional education, science, and world languages. Most significant is that we have retained our recruits from Michigan, with many now teaching in the district for 8+ years. "

- Mary Gunderson, Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools, NC

"Top drawer candidates and a 1st class venue!"

- Donna Franklin, Yuma AZ

What to Expect

We have invited recruiters from throughout the country to attend this event and meet our graduating seniors and alumni.

Upon arriving at the Eastern Michigan University Convocation Center, our staff will register and provide you with the following:

  1. A handout that lists all participating districts and their anticipated subject vacancy areas
  2. A name tag which must be worn in order to enter and participate in the fair
  3. A floor plan with booth locations

Points of interest:

1. Dress professionally and wear low-heeled, comfortable, cushioned shoes as the flooring is concrete and you will be standing all day.

View the video Interview Dress for Men or The look (for Women)

2. Each recruiter determines how much time he/she will spend with a candidate.

3. Please be advised that while you are standing in line your voice carries and that recruiters can hear your comments.

4. Some districts require that candidates successfully pass a test before they can offer an employment contract. This test may take place at the fair or be scheduled for another time.

5. Some representatives, particulary those from out-of-state, will be prepared to offer you a teaching contract after your interview. Be prepared to respond in case you are offered a position.

6. Not all recruiters will stay until the end of the fair. We have asked school district representatives if their recruiters are leaving early. If they indicated, "yes," we have noted this in the packet. We suggest you visit these districts in the morning to avoid missing the opportunity to speak with their recruiters.

Potential Interview Questions

Take some time to review these interview questions. The more prepared you are, the more professional and committed you’ll appear. Prepare a fifteen to twenty second answer to each of these  questions. Be prepared to elaborate, but start off by keeping your responses as concise as possible. You don’t have as much time as you would in a regular interview.

Questions About Your Teaching Philosophy

·  What is your philosophy of education?

·  What do you think teachers should be able to accomplish in the classroom?

·  What kind of a relationship would you like to establish with your students?

·  Discuss your philosophy of discipline.

·  How do you think students should be evaluated/graded?

·  Can you explain individualization and how a teacher can facilitate this process?

·  What do you see as the problems facing elementary and secondary education? What do you think you can do about it?

Questions About Your Student Teaching Experience

·  What was your greatest strength as a student teacher?

·  What was your most rewarding experience? Why?

·  If you could go back and do anything different, what would it be?

·  Discuss your strong and weak points as explained by your critic teacher.

Questions About Your Qualifications and Self-Evaluation

· When and why did you decide to become a teacher?

·  What have you done that demonstrates your creativity as a teacher?

·  What unique qualities do you have to offer students?

·  What experiences do you have working with a culturally diverse population?

·  Why should we hire you?
